Biography

John C. Magee, MD, is the Jeremiah & Claire Turcotte Professor of Transplant Surgery at the University of Michigan. He is a transplant surgeon with clinical and research expertise in the fields of end stage organ disease and transplantation. He served as the Surgical Director of the Pediatric Liver and Kidney Transplant programs for 25 years. Dr. Magee has also served as the Director of the University of Michigan Transplant Center as well as the Head of the Section of Transplant Surgery. Dr. Magee’s research interests center on improving the care of patients with end stage organ disease, exploring efforts to prevent disease, and optimizing the role of transplantation, deceased and living organ donation, and organ allocation. He has a specific interest in pediatric liver disease and transplantation. He has served as the Principal Investigator of the Scientific & Data Coordinating Center for the NIH/NIDDK funded multi-center Childhood Liver Disease Research Network (ChiLDReN), and its predecessors, since 2006. Dr. Magee has been an active member of the Society of Pediatric Liver Transplantation (SPLIT) including the serving as the Chair of the SPLIT Registry Committee from 2009 to 2015 and Chair of the SPLIT Council from 2010 to 2014. Dr. Magee has had multiple leadership roles in other national societies including the American Association for the Study of Liver Disease, the Organ Donation & Transplantation Alliance, and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. He currently serves as the Chair of the Transplant Accreditation and Certification Council, which is responsible for accrediting Transplant Surgery Fellowship programs and certifying graduates of these programs. Dr. Magee also currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors for the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network.
